Doctor Who Concordance Wiki

Edward "Ed" Gold was an Australian astronaut who served as deputy on the Bowie Base One mission in the late 2050s.

Gold was born in 2008 and grew up in Adelaide, Australia at a time when the country was seriously lagging behind in the Space Race. He was fascinated by space as a child, and his father would later describe how he built model rockets from cardboard and plastics. He was educated at St Andrew's School and St Peter's College. He received a bachelor of engineering degree in mechanical engineering with first class honours from the University of Adelaide in 2030. He completed a doctorate in the same subject at the University of Adelaide in 2034. After completing his studies, he accepted an offer from Lockheed in Atlanta. He became a United States citizen in March 2040, hoping to gain entry to NASA's astronaut program.

He returned to Australia in 2044 to head a campaign to pursue an Australian space programme. Even though Australia was the fourth nation to build and launch a satellite from its own territory, it was almost completely reliant on satellites owned and operated by other countries. He argued that South Australia had the infrastucture, the industrial base and the university base to do it, as well as the Defence Science and Technology Organisation facilities and the Woomera facilities. His campaign was successful, pioneering the construction of a space elevator off the coast of Western Australia. He later assisted with the Pitt Stop project. (DW: "The Waters of Mars")
