Francis Bacon was a member of the court of Queen Elizabeth I of England. He was in attendance when William Shakespeare was granted an audience with Elizabeth to discuss the concern Shakespeare's character of Falstaff had caused to Sir John Oldcastle, who served as an obvious inspiration for the character. Bacon found the resemblance to be particularly noticeable, and suggested that Shakespeare may write a history of Hamlet, prince of Denmark. Fearing that it would not be in his style, Shakespeare told Bacon that he was unenthusiastic. This caused Bacon to dismiss him as a "scribbler." (DW: "The Chase")

He authored Of the Advancement of Learning. (SJA: "The Eternity Trap")
