Hydrogen is a gaseous universally abundant element usually assigned to the first group of the periodic system, and is atomically the lightest known element. Chemically very active, hydrogen is highly explosive in the presence of oxygen. According to the TARDIS Information System, this attribute meant that hydrogen had a "heavy responsibility for the creation of so-called life-forms." The TARDIS Information System went on to state that it was widely believed among adherents of Scientific Mythology that this element was the basic constituent out of which the Galaxy was first formed. Evidence offered in support of this hypothesis included its supposed appearance in spectroscopic analysis of massive star bodies. (DW: "Castrovalva")
