History[]
In the 1890s, the National Swiss Museum was established in Zurich. It was formally inaugurated on a Saturday in the presence of the Federal Council, the diplomatic body, the Federal Assembly, and the cantonal and municipal authorities. Speeches were delivered by M. Ruffy, the President of the Confederation, and M. Lachenal, the head of the Department of the Interior. A banquet followed, at which Count Montholon, the French ambassador, referred to by a contemporary London newspaper as "doyen of the Diplomatic Body", proposed a toast to the Swiss Confederation.
