Life[]

Following his creation of the character of Falstaff, Shakespeare was granted an audience with Queen Elizabeth I of England to discuss the concern his character had caused to Sir John Oldcastle, who served as an obvious inspiration for Falstaff. Although he feared that he had caused offense, Elizabeth told him that she found it amusing and, upon learning that he presently had no further plans for the character, encouraged him to write a play featuring Falstaff in love. Francis Bacon, who was also in attendance, suggested that Shakespeare may write a history of Hamlet, prince of Denmark. Fearing that it would not be in his style, Shakespeare told Bacon that he was unenthusiastic. (DW: "The Chase")

Legacy[]

His plays were collected in Mr. William Shakespeares Comedies, Histories, & Tragedies. (DW: "The Next Doctor")

The Monk believed that if he were to prevent political strife in Europe by helping King Harold win the Battle of Hastings and subsequently aid the Earth's technological development with "a few hints and tips," Shakespeare would be able to put Hamlet on television. (DW: "The Time Meddler")

From a statistical point of view, it was said that if one were to give typewriters to a tree full of monkeys, they would eventually produce the works of William Shakespeare. The Doctor thought that in practice they would "still be tapping out gibberish" at the "end of the millennium." (DW: "Mawdryn Undead")
